You can get the fastest possible internet speeds by connecting your computer to your Fiber Jack or router with an Ethernet cable.Want to know how fast your devices can go over Wi-Fi? Check out this blog post to make the most of your wireless connection.

Fiber internet (also known as an ‘fiber optic’ internet) is a type of high-speed connection that sends data as pulses of light through extremely thin strands of fiberglass. Data can travel through those strands at speeds almost as fast as the speed of light. Using fiber internet can help you with smoother video calls, gaming with less lag, uploading and downloading large files quickly, streaming movies and shows, and handling busy households with multiple internet users.Google Fiber Webpass is a wireless technology from GFiber, using millimeter wave technology to create a point-to-point wireless network that delivers fast, reliable internet to apartment buildings, condominiums, and businesses in select cities.Learn more about Google Fiber Webpass.

All GFiber service plans include next-gen equipment at no extra cost, including a router. You’re also welcome to use your own router if you already have one you prefer.

  1. Visit fiber.google.com.
  2. Enter your address, then click the "Check availability" button to see if service is available for your location.
  3. If GFiber is available at your address, follow the on-screen instructions to sign up.

The 1 Gig plan can take up to an hour to install with either a self-install kit or a professional installation. The 2, 5, and 8 Gig plans require professional installation and typically takes up to two hours. These time estimates include installation, set-up, and any software updates to the equipment.

With GFiber, the installation process includes three main steps:

  1. First, fiber cable is placed at the street level.
  2. Then, fiber is run from the street to homes and apartment buildings, and connected using a box on the outside of those homes and buildings (known as an NIU). We call this a ‘drop install’ and you don’t need to be home when it happens. The NIU connects your home or apartment building to the fiber that runs through the neighborhood.
  3. Finally, a technician will come to your home and install a Fiber Jack if you don’t already have one. This small box will be where internet enters your home. The Fiber Jack will then be connected to your router. Depending on whether you choose self install or pro install, this can be done by the technician or by someone in your household.

When you sign up for GFiber, we’ll provide all the equipment you’ll need for your internet to run smoothly. Here is what’s included with most of our plans:A Network Interface Unit (NIU)This is a box that a technician will place outside your home or apartment building. It’s in a location that you typically won’t see and won’t need to access. The NIU is the designated point between the rest of the fiber optic cable running through your neighborhood and your home or building. Once installed, you won’t need to think about it anymore.A Fiber JackThis is another small box where internet enters your home from the outside. If there isn’t already a Fiber Jack in your home, our technicians will set this up during your installation appointment.A routerYou’ll need a router to connect to Wi-Fi. Your plan will determine what kind of router you get, but you also use your own router if you like.A mesh extenderYou may or may not need a mesh extender for more internet coverage based on the size of your home or business. Most of our plans come with at least one Mesh Extender included, but you can request more for an additional fee.

FAQs

Why is my first Google Fiber bill so high? ›

Some bills have a prorated first month

For most customers, your first bill will be higher than your following monthly bills. If you signed up for GFiber after the start of the current month's billing cycle, your first bill will include those remaining days of the month (prorated period) plus your full month of service.

How to get the most out of Google Fiber? ›

To get the fastest speeds, your Mesh Extender should be halfway between your router and the furthest location where Wi-Fi coverage is needed. If it's placed farther away, any devices connected to the Mesh Extender may experience slower Wi-Fi speeds (even though your device may be showing a strong Wi-Fi connection).

Why is my Google Fiber not 1 gig? ›

Is there a fee to cancel Google Fiber? ›

Why is my Google Fiber Wi-Fi so slow? ›
